My 1969 Corvette Project

The Saga Continues

September 4, 2000

Here are some shots of the new rear suspension. I went with the Performance Plus package from Vette Brakes and Products, which provided everything to rebuild the front and rear suspension, and steering.

September 5, 2000

I got the steering knuckles on, the shocks mounted, the front mono-spring installed, and the ball joints tightened up.

Some more old parts had to be replaced due to wear. The steering ball stud, and a clutch linkage are shown here. Much more wear, and the clutch linkage would have sheared off.

I replaced the steering components with heavy duty stuff from Vette Brakes and Products. You can see the difference. I hope I can feel the difference. At high speeds the car felt very loose.

October 7, 2000

I got the rest of the steering and front wheel assemblies together.

I decided to just clean-up and turn the existing rotors, since they had enough material on them. I then packed the bearings with Mobil One synthetic grease, and put the rotors on.

October 11, 2000

I got the rest of the rear suspension components, and began assembling the new rear offset trailing arms.

I first packed the outside bearings, installed them in the spindle housing, and then installed the outer seal. I should mention I checked the bearing stackup for play before I started assembly.

I then assembled the dust shield, and torqued the assembly bolts. Lastly I assembled the stainless steel parking brake kit. This parking brake design is pretty hokey. Based on the design, and the condition I found the old parking brakes in, I am surprised there were not serious problems with this assembly. I am still waiting for one small clip before I can put the spindle in.

I have discovered another problem, which will delay me again. I will discuss this latest development later.
